Targeting monuments / Zagreb, Belgrade, Sarajevo, The Hague

SENSE – Transitional Justice Center / Pula (Croatia) and Documenta – Center for Dealing with the Past / Zagreb (Croatia) in cooperation with the Humanitarian Law Centre, Belgrade (Serbia), Europa Nostra / The Hague and the History Museum of BiH / Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) is preparing the exhibition dedicated to the devastation of the cultural and religious heritage during the wars in former Yugoslavia.

Exhibition is based on the interactive narrative "Targeting history and memory" (project manager Mirko Klarin), that shows how serious crimes against cultural, historic and religious heritage – committed during the wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo in the 1990-s – were investigated, reconstructed and prosecuted at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in Den Haag.

Interactive narrative also includes a selection of devastated historic monuments and religious heritage that haven’t been prosecuted at the ICTY or anywhere else. In addition, the exhibition layout created by Branka Benčić (also a curator of the Croatian Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale 2017) includes other important examples of heritage destruction that is unaccounted for as well as exhibits that testify how the monuments of the anti-fascists resistance in some parts of former Yugoslavia were destroyed in recent few decades.

Contributors to the layout and content of this exhibition are many, from distinguished wartime photographers from the former Yugoslavia, archival institutions, museums, hystorians and individuals who witnessed heritage destruction as it happened to the distinguished international experts for cultural heritage such are Helen Walasek, Andras Riedlmayer, Colin Kaiser.

Opening of the exhibition is scheduled for April 19, 2017 in Zagreb (The Croatian Academy Glyptotheque), May 27, 2017 in Belgrade (The Centre for Cultural Decontamination), and June 23, 2017 in Sarajevo (History Museum of BiH).
