Scientific Colloquium on the events in Orthodox Church in Glina, 1941

he Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb on June 28 and June 29 2012 held a scientific colloquium: "What really happened in the Serbian Orthodox Church in Glina between July 29/30 and  August 4/5,1941? Testimonies and cultural memory", organized by the History department and the Institute for Croatian History at The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, in cooperation with the Serbian National Council, Documenta - Centre for Dealing with the Past - and the Croatian State Archives.

In their presentations, thirty prominent scientists and publicists from Croatia, Serbia, Germany and Canada tried to answer the question about the tragic events in Glina. At the conference, they presented papers which deal with socio-political image of Glina at the end of 1930s, as well as with the demographic, economic, and cultural state of affairs, with which they brought to light the social context of the time and memories of the participants. They also dealt with later interpretations and research of the events. Aware of the importance and delicacy of the topic, the conference was meticulously planned and included truly excellent lectures. An especially valuable contribution to the debate was made by time witnesses themselves, who today live in Croatia and Israel.

With the intention of the best possible organization of the colloquia and contribution to dealing and overcoming of the traumatic past, we plan to publish a collection of scientific articles produced on the basis of the presentations. This will be done in order to encourage further research to the extent to which it proves to be necessary and to deepen the discussion on the modalities of cultural memory that would be the most appropriate in the context of contemporary conditions. Most of the participants support the return of the name of "The Memorial House" in Glina, emphasizing that the name "Croatian House", in the place where Serbian civilians were killed, is not appropriate.
