Crime in Baranja (Milenko Marić, accused)
Criminal proceedings against Milenko Marić, indicted of War Crimes against Civilians under Art. 120(1) of Penal code of the Republic of Croatia.
A hearing in the case against Milenko Marić for crimes in Baranja began on April 19, 2017. The amended indictment charges the defendant of arresting prisoners, taking them to police station, imprisoning, interrogating, beating and abusing them, as a member of paramilitary forces (police station Beli Manastir) in summer and autumn 1991.
On September 13, 2017, the evidentiary proceedings in this case were terminated by hearing a witness who was detained in Beli Manastir during August 1991, as a member of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia. The witness stated that accused Milenko Marić helped him during the detention by bringing him food and water, and trying to protect him in other ways.
The war crimes Council of the Osijek County Court issued a sentence by which the accused was acquitted of the charges, and then the president of the council publicly announced it.
The accused Milenko Marić was extradited to Croatia in January 2017 from London, based on the European Arrest Warrant. Based on the amended and specified indictment, a separate procedure was conducted against him. During the entire trial, the defendant was in an investigative jail.
